What we cover

Every breed and every discipline — Thoroughbreds and warmbloods, hunters and jumpers, barrel racers, broodmares, and backyard trail horses. Most policies start with mortality coverage and build from there. Tell us how you use your horse and we'll tell you what actually applies — no padding.

The core policy

Equine Mortality

If your horse dies or is stolen, the policy pays the insured value. This is where most owners start, and for many it's enough.

Add-on to mortality

Major Medical & Surgical

Helps with vet bills for accidents, illness, and surgery — including colic, the claim nobody plans for and everybody remembers.

For trainers & barns

Care, Custody & Control

Covers you when a horse you board, train, or haul is injured or dies in your care and the owner holds you responsible.

Personal & commercial

Equine Liability

If your horse injures someone or damages property, this pays defense costs and covered claims. Homeowner's policies usually won't.

Property

Farm & Ranch

Barns, tack, equipment, and the land your operation runs on, written together with your liability coverage so nothing falls in a gap.

Professional

Trainers, Instructors & Clubs

Liability for lessons, training, clinics, shows, and riding club events — the work that turns a barn into a business.

Why an independent equine agency

Horse insurance is a specialty market. A general agent can technically write it. That's not the same as knowing it.

  • Your homeowner's policy almost certainly excludes horse activities the moment money changes hands — a lesson, a lease, a boarder.
  • We only work with carriers that specialize in equine risk and carry an A rating or better, and we shop them against each other for you.
  • Values, use, and discipline all change what a horse costs to insure. We ask the right questions up front so claims don't surprise you later.
  • When something goes wrong at 2 a.m., you call us, not a national call center.

Robbie with Hall of Fame driver Tim Tetrick at Mohawk Racetrack, North America Cup night, 2015.

Horses have been in my family for generations, going back to our roots in Canada. My father and grandfather raced Standardbreds, and I grew up at the track watching their horses go; my aunt rode and showed jumpers, so I saw that side of the horse world too.

Now based in Tampa, I started Kelstead to stay close to the animals I've been around my whole life — and to make sure the horses, and the people whose livelihoods depend on them, are protected when it counts.

How it works

Tell us about your horse

Age, breed, use, value, and vet history — the short form below or a ten-minute phone call covers it.

We shop the specialty markets

We take your details to the A-rated equine carriers and come back with real options, not a single take-it-or-leave-it number.

Review and bind

We walk through the policy in plain English — what's covered, what's excluded, what to do on the worst day. Then you're covered.

Common questions

How much does horse insurance cost?

Mortality coverage typically runs a small percentage of the horse's insured value per year, with the rate depending on age, breed, and use. Medical and surgical endorsements add a flat annual amount. We'll give you an exact figure once we know your horse — quotes are free.

I own one pleasure horse. Do I really need liability coverage?

If your horse ever leaves your property, is handled by anyone else, or is around visitors, you have liability exposure. Personal equine liability is one of the least expensive coverages we write, and it's the one people are most relieved to have.

What is Care, Custody & Control?

Standard liability policies exclude damage to property "in your care" — and legally, a boarded horse is the owner's property. CC&C fills that gap for trainers, boarding barns, and haulers, covering injury or death of a non-owned horse in your care.

What do you need from me for a quote?

For a single horse: age, breed, sex, discipline or use, purchase price or current value, and any significant vet history. For a farm or business: the above plus what the operation does and roughly how many horses move through it. That's enough to get real numbers.
